Ordering water on Samui can be pretty frustrating. Most foreigners living on this island, never had to worry about water supply, because back home water comes out of the tap without questions asked, mostly at such a good quality that it can be used for drinking.
Water is important. We need water for our coffee, for cooking, for drinking, for flushing our toilets, for our whiskey.
There are these guys that come around in a truck loaded with five gallon bottles of water. They just drive around to all the places that they deliver water and look to see if there are any empty water bottles waiting to be picked up. If yes, they will stop. If not – they keep going. Sometimes water gets delivered the same day the water bottles are put out. Sometimes within the hour. Sometimes you have to wait for a week or more to get a bottle of water. By then you are hoping to see the guy in order to tell him to give extra bottles so that you won’t get stuck again without it. Of course you will never see him, he drops one off eventually and disappears.
The worst thing that can happen to you is running out of clean water for your sanitary needs. Have you ever taken a shower after a sweaty 35 degrees day with water out of a bottle? Have your dishes ever pilled up for days because nothing came out of the water tap? That’s what is going to happen sooner or later to you if you stay long term on Samui. To get clean water delivered to your house can be en experience on its own.
Water delivery companies have a phone number for you to call them to let them know – “Hey, I’d like some water if it’s not too much trouble today”. There is no correlation whatsoever between the number of times you call these guys and the time that you wait for your next delivery of water. Many times they won’t come at all. If they don’t understand you, if they don’t know where you leave or if they have no water, they will just hang up the phone on you.
It’s Thai customer service, status quo.
